What
Extended Learning is not. . .
Contrary
to some popular notions, the purpose of the Extended Learning
facilitator is not to help in college and scholarship
searches, or to prepare students for pre-college tests.
However, the activities and learning experiences
offered by the facilitator will inevitably point students in
certain directions and strengthen their knowledge for
pre-college tests. The
facilitator will seek to accommodate students’ needs in
terms of college preparation and will connect students with
people and organizations that can help them.
Nevertheless, the focus of the IEP will not be centered
around specific college or scholarship searches, nor should it
encompass preparation for pre-college tests.

What
Extended Learning is. . .
Extended
Learning is:
-An
opportunity for students to explore areas of interest that
they would not normally encounter in the classroom.
-An
opportunity for students to gain knowledge that exceeds school
standards in the areas of language, science, math, and the
humanities.
-An opportunity to experience lectures, tours, speakers, and
discussion sessions that are above average high school level
in intellectual demand and stimulation.
-An opportunity to become aware of the academic world and all
that it has to offer and all that it will demand of
students.
-An opportunity to consider the state of the world today
across many areas--locally, nationally, politically,
scientifically, theoretically, philosophically, etc.--and to
consider how the student can and will impact the world in the
future.
-An
opportunity to develop insight and educational values.
-An
opportunity to develop who the student is intellectually in
relation to pursuits of higher knowledge and demanding
academic skills.
