Secondary Gifted

MISSION STATEMENT:
The mission of the Extended Learning Program for grades 7-12 is to enhance learning and preparation for future academic endeavors.  ELP experiences educate gifted students in areas that exceed the National Standards for school curriculum.  All learning goals are in accordance with each student’s Individualized Education Program.

Specific High School extras:
Wellsville:  Media Mania
Baldwin City:  CEDADS (current events, discussion and donuts)
Eudora:  Speaker lunches
*In some cases, Modules can be customized to better fit the needs of each student.
Modules simply provide an ostensible plan for us to follow.  In addition, the content of the modules exceeds national standards and has been recommended by professionals working at levels of highest educational achievement.

What Extended Learning is not. . .
Contrary to some popular notions, the purpose of the Extended Learning facilitator is not to help in college and scholarship searches, or to prepare students for pre-college tests.  However, the activities and learning experiences offered by the facilitator will inevitably point students in certain directions and strengthen their knowledge for pre-college tests.  The facilitator will seek to accommodate students’ needs in terms of college preparation and will connect students with people and organizations that can help them.  Nevertheless, the focus of the IEP will not be centered around specific college or scholarship searches, nor should it encompass preparation for pre-college tests.

What  Extended Learning is. . .
Extended Learning is:
-An opportunity for students to explore areas of interest that they would not normally encounter in the classroom.
-An opportunity for students to gain knowledge that exceeds school standards in the areas of language, science, math, and the humanities.
-An opportunity to experience lectures, tours, speakers, and discussion sessions that are above average high school level in intellectual demand and stimulation.
-An opportunity to become aware of the academic world and all that it has to offer and all that it will demand of students.
-An opportunity to consider the state of the world today across many areas--locally, nationally, politically, scientifically, theoretically, philosophically, etc.--and to consider how the student can and will impact the world in the future.
-An opportunity to develop insight and educational values.
-An opportunity to develop who the student is intellectually in relation to pursuits of higher knowledge and demanding academic skills.

Extended Learning Special Events and Opportunities:
Jr. High Level--
all students in 7th and 8th grade Extended Learning will compete in Odyssey of the Mind.  A great deal of time will be devoted to working on our Odyssey of the Mind problem.  Subject areas pertaining to the Odyssey of the Mind problem vary from year to year.

Sr. High Level--

all students in 9th-12th grade Extended Learning will contribute monthly articles to an Extended Learning Newspaper entitled THE EXTENSION.  The articles will give students the opportunity to experiment with writing style and content relating to their IEP goals and/or areas of immediate interest the student might discover during the year.
